Stephanie Beatriz has starred as Detective Rosa Diaz on the police precinct sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine since 2013. In the wake of the nationwide protests against police brutality, the actress has decided to make a statement of her own. She took to Twitter on Tuesday (June 2) to call on her fellow actors playing cops on TV to make a donation in support of the the protestors.
"I’m an actor who plays a detective on tv. If you currently play a cop? If you make tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop? I’ll let you do the math," Beatriz wrote, alongside a screenshot of her own donation of $11,000 to the Community Justice Exchange.
Beatriz thanked fellow actor Griffin Newman—who guest starred as a detective on Blue Bloods for a two episode arc—for inspiring her to make her own donation. Newman shared a tweet with his own $11,000 donation to the Community Justice Exchange and Act Blue, writing "I’m an out-of-work actor who (improbably) played a detective on two episodes of BLUE BLOODS almost a decade ago. If you currently play a cop? If you make tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop? I’ll let you do the math."
While not everybody can donate $11,000 to the charity of their choice, there are still plenty of other ways to help. If you want to donate, any amount helps. For all the various ways you can help out, check out this full list of resources here.
