His wife,Ā Kathryn, made the announcement during his radio show.

The tributes poured in for Limbaugh, who was the most-listened-to national radio host in America. Former President Donald Trump told Fox News that Limbaugh was a "legend".

"There arenā€™t too many legends around, but he is a legend," Trump said. "He had tremendous insight. He got it, he really got it."

Former President George Bush called Limbaugh "an indomitable spirit with a big heart."

ā€œWhile he was brash, at times controversial, and always opinionated, he spoke his mind as a voice for millions of Americans and approached each day with gusto,ā€ Bush said in a statement. ā€œRush Limbaugh was an indomitable spirit with a big heart, and he will be missed.ā€

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany credited Limbaugh for her decision to embark on a career in politics and media.

"America has lost the giant of conservatism, a man who inspired tens of thousands of Rush Babies like me to enter politics and media," McEnany said. "I can say without hesitation I would not have entered this field if it were not for those rides in my dadā€™s pickup truck listening to Rush."
